Jessica Moore gets back to the grassroots of tennis with a series of Masterclasses in Bendigo:

Looking back on a career filled with grand slam appearances and years spent on the road as a tennis professional, Jessica Moore loves getting back to the grassroots of the sport.

Moore hosted a series of masterclass sessions at the Fosterville Gold Tennis Centre, providing an insight into her journey from amateur to a professional player as well as teaching participants on-court skills.

Moore grew up in Williams in Western Australia, a small town south-west of Perth where her earliest memories of tennis were playing at the local club with her brother.

“That’s what you do when you live in the country, it’s all about sport,” Moore said.

Moore has experience playing at all four tennis grand slams (Wimbledon, Australian, US and French Opens) with a career high rank of 132 (singles) and 67 (doubles).

Amidst a busy schedule in the lead-up to the Australian Open, Moore found time to come to Bendigo to work with tennis juniors.

“As a player it feels good to be able to give back,” Moore said.

“I love coming out to country communities to work with kids and give them the opportunity to learn about the sport.”

The UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour adds a new venue to its roster this week when Bendigo becomes the latest city to host one of the sport’s six Super Series tournaments on 9th to 13th January 2019.

Approximately 150Km north of Melbourne, the recently redeveloped Bendigo Tennis Centre stages the first of three weeks of international wheelchair tennis in Victoria, culminating in the Australia Open, the first Grand Slam of the year.

A stellar field that features players from 17 countries includes nine of the world’s Top 10 men, seven of the world’s Top 10 women and five of the world’s Top 10 quad players.

Four players won men’s singles Super Series titles in 2017 and three of them line-up for the Bendigo Wheelchair Tennis Open, with only current world No. 2 Alfie Hewett missing.

Previously held in Sydney, Australia’s Super Series was won by Shingo Kunieda in 2017 as the Japanese star claimed his first Super Series singles title since June 2015 and the first of what turned out to be two Super Series titles last season. Kunieda lines up this year alongside opposition that includes Belgium’s world No. 4 Joachim Gerard, who denied the eight-time ITF World Champion a victorious end to 2018 at the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters.

Among those challenging Kunieda and Gerard will be world No. 3 Gustavo Fernandez and world No. 7 Gordon Reid, both Super Series champions in 2018. Meanwhile, two-time Wimbledon champion Stefan Olsson will also be among those looking to begin the 2019 UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour in style after partnering Reid to win last week’s men’s doubles event at the Brisbane International.

World No. 2 Yui Kamiji, world No. 3 Aniek van Koot and world No. 3 Sabine Ellerbrock head the women’s singles entries. Kamiji will be out to defend the ranking points she accrued for winning the first Super Series of 2018, while van Koot ended last season as the only player to beat both Kamiji and world No. 1 Diede de Groot during the year.

While world No. 6 Kgothatso Montjane, world No. 7 Lucy Shuker, world No. 8 Marjolein Buis and world No. 9 Katharina Kruger are also among a stacked field, the current Top 10 players will need to look out for the likes of talented Chinese Zhenzhen Zhu, who reached her first career Super Series final at last year’s Cajun Classic.

After ending 2018 as quad ITF World Champion for the first time, Dylan Alcott completes a full complement of last year’s singles champions in Sydney who will be looking to defend their Super Series points in Bendigo. Alcott and world No. 5 Heath Davidson head the Australian challenge on home soil once again, with Alcott unbeaten in his last two tournaments after ending 2018 by winning the US Open in New York and the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters in Orlando.

World No. 2 David Wagner, who occupied the top spot until the conclusion of the NEC Masters in December, won three of last year’s six Super Series events and finished runner-up to Alcott in Sydney 12 months ago after a three-set final. With the current top five ranked players in action in Bendigo, Alcott, Wagner and Davidson line up alongside Japan’s Koji Sugeno and Brit Andy Lapthorne.

World No. 4 Sugeno claimed his first career Super Series title in France last season, but came up short against Korea Republic’s Kyu-Seung Kim in the final of the Asian Para Games and Kim is also among this week’s opposition.

Jessica Moore has had a career high singles ranking of 132 and through her tennis abilities created the fantastic opportunity of playing singles at both the Australian and U.S Opens.

Jessica is now moving up the world rankings in the doubles with a current world ranking of 67.

Jessica Moore recently teamed up with Monique Adamczak to win the Guangzhou Open in China – a WTA event with tournament prizemoney of $250,000.

Jessica and Monique were also finalists at the Tianjin Open in China – another WTA event with tournament prizemoney of $250,000.

There will be two on-court sessions:

SESSION ONE: Intermediate Masterclass: 10.30am to 12.30pm for 11 to 13 year olds.

SESSION TWO: Advanced Masterclass: 1.45pm to 3.45pm training session for 14 to 18 year olds.

All participants are invited (and encouraged) to get the most of the event by attending a Q&A session with Jessica Moore from 1.00pm to 1.30pm where Jessica will share her pathway to becoming a professional tennis player, including playing on the circuit and the joy of playing in tournaments like the Australian Open, Wimbledon, the French Open and the U.S. Open.

An exciting new competition pathway is now being set into place for children in the Central Victorian Region. We are proud to bring to you an 11 and Under Central Victoria Futures Competition (formerly Super 10’s) and in its second year, the 13 and Under Central Victoria Futures Competition.

24 children, 4 teams of 6 players per team, will be selected in each competition.
Each team will have a team captain who are Tennis Australian Club Professional Coaches.

Their roles are player support:

• Pre match warm ups
• Team motivation
• Assistance with singles / doubles strategies
• Team captains will be there to give advice during match-play (which is a tremendous support for all players involved).

All coaches are committed to this tennis pathway and are very keen to establish this as a permanent player pathway in terms 2 and 3 in each year going forward.

We are in discussions with Tennis Victoria and trust they will be very interested in some shape or form in players participating in our Central Victoria Futures Competition (more details to come).

It was fantastic to be back on court with our Bendigo Tennis Academy Holiday Tennis Clinic. All players that attended the clinic were in the running to win the Wilson Most Improved Player Award. We would like to congratulate all children who participated in the holiday clinic, having the Most Improved Player Award certainly adds an incentive for the children to train to their full potential.

Congratulations to Fletcher Waters as he has taken out the Wilson most Improved Player Award. Fletcher has been presented a Wilson Burn Tennis Racquet valued at $340.00.

It gives children the opportunity to participate on Show Courts before the Professional Players take to the courts for their matches in the Australian Open. Our representatives this year are Shanali Wickramasinghe, Chloe Tweed, Nadia Sampson, Hayley Brane, Sylvia Martin, Nathan de Noronha, Ruben de Noronha, Kobe Read and Jimi Read. Brianna Smith will be joining the children on court, thanks Bree!

In exciting news Shanali has been given the opportunity to “Toss the coin” for the players prior to the match. It’s the first time a Bendigo player has been given the opportunity to toss the coin. We wish the Hotshot team all the very best.

Congratulations to Tiahna Leader (representing our region – Loddon Campaspe) who won the Girls 14 and Under singles in the Inter- Regional Championships played at Wodonga on 5th to 7th January, 2018. Tiahna played Ruby Rothman (Central Highlands) and won the final 6/3 3/6 – 10/3 in the Super Tiebreak. Tiahna then teamed with Daphne Crossman to win the Girls 14 and Under Doubles final 6/2 6/3 against Ruby Rothman and Lanah Welbourn from Central Highlands. Congratulations also to Toby Howlett who teamed with Josh Bavich, they were finalists in the Boys 14 /under Doubles, the winners in the final were Ryan Lee and Ned Simpson 6/0 6/1. Congratulations to our Bendigo Tennis Academy coach Eliza Long who won the Open Singles at Wodonga – Eliza won the final 6/2 6/0 against Olivia Ryan from Barwon. Eliza then teamed with Danielle Bowles to win the Open Woman’s Doubles final with a 6/2 6/2 win over Olivia Ryan and Nicole Mullen from Barwon.
